What is a Vietnamese Phin Filter?

First introduced by the French, the Phin Filter is now a uniquely Vietnamese tool used to brew coffee. Synonymous with Vietnamese coffee culture, the Phin filter is a slow drip method of brewing coffee which emphasizes the innate flavors of the coffee beans used.

Made from stainless steel or aluminum, the Phin is a no-paper, no-waste traditional tool that helps coffee drinkers get fully immersed into Vietnamese coffee culture within minutes!

Parts of the Phin Filter

Phin consists of different parts

  • Lid - This is used to cover the filter so nothing gets into it while brewing the coffee, and to provide a little dish you can put the filter on after brewing.
  • Gravity Press - This sits on top of the coffee before you pour in any water to keep the coffee on the bottom of the filter.
  • Filter cup/Chamber - This is where the coffee and water go. The top of the cup is open like a normal cup while the bottom is perforated, with holes small enough to let the brew pass through but not big enough to let the coffee grounds out.

However, not all Phins are the same. Some Phins are made from stainless steel, while traditionally they are made with aluminum. While some Phins employ a strict gravity-brewing process, others use a twist method to better lock in the coffee grounds while brewing.

When selecting which type of Phin to buy, these distinctions are important to take into account, as the composition of a Phin can affect the coffee drinking experience: flavour, brewing time, and temperature.

Unlike traditional Phin filters, our Phin filter is made of high quality stainless steel, and is composed of three pieces: a brewing chamber which is attached to a drip tray, a lid to lock in the heat, and a twist-in gravity press plate.

The nature of our Phin filter in using a twist-in gravity press plate, which involves screwing the plate into place on top of the coffee grounds rather than a traditional perforated insert which relies solely on gravity to hold the coffee grounds in place, means that pressure is applied more evenly to the coffee grounds, allowing for a smoother, more even brew.

Likewise, the chamber of our Phin filter is made using an extra-thick stainless steel, allowing for greater heat retention and a stronger flavor profile to come through in every brew.
